Overview
PMN approached Daylight with the task of building a contemporary multi-channel platform to propel their business into the future. The aim was to establish a fresh connection with a new generation of listeners and readers while also catering to a geographically fragmented audience.
My role
- UX design.
-
Early stage research & concepts.
-
Wireframes & prototypes.
I didn’t get to follow this one all the way to the finish line (another designer took over when I left for my OE!), but I led the first half and really loved some of the concepts I got to bring to life.
Research
At the project’s kick-off, I explored what other media channels were doing from a digital perspective: analysing key trends in layout, navigation, and engagement tools across radio, news, and entertainment platforms. I shared these findings with the broader team, and together we pitched the most relevant examples to the client along with must-have features that would appeal to both PMN’s current and future audience.

Accessibility
I tested the accessibility of the colour palette developed by the creative team, particularly how colours performed when layered or placed on top of each other. Once the testing was complete, I provided clear guidance on which colour combinations were suitable to use across the website.

Concepts
Early in the project, I explored a wide range of creative directions to help position PMN in a way that would resonate with a younger, more digitally engaged audience. Based on my research, I drew inspiration from global leaders in the online radio and culture space including Refuge Worldwide, Rinse FM, and NTS. I also drew inspiration from other modern media platforms like The Spinoff, Stuff, Dazed, Vice & It’s Nice That. Each of these platforms had carved out distinct digital identities that balanced strong editorial tone, cultural relevance, and seamless live content integration. These references helped shape a broader conversation around how PMN could feel more contemporary, experimental, and connected to global youth culture, while still staying true to its roots.

Reflection
I really enjoyed contributing to this project and working with our Pasifika consultants to help make PMN appealing to a younger audience. It was a great opportunity to deepen my cultural understanding in Aotearoa and explore a future-focused approach to online radio. I also enjoyed researching how other multi-channel radio platforms build their digital presence and was glad to contribute ideas around UX and accessibility, helping the broader team keep these considerations in mind.
